This dedicated ROV-mountable ultrasonic thickness gauge is purpose-built for measuring metal thickness in the harshest subsea conditions, up to 3,000m deep. Equipped with Cygnus’ Multiple-Echo technology and Echo-Echo measuring modes, it fits the bill for accurate measurements through coatings, as specified by Classification Societies – reducing time and costs. With the integration of Live A-Scan, users can achieve advanced verification of measurements through detailed visual analysis at the topside. Combined with a high-performance piezo-composite probe and auto-selection of an optimal measuring mode, this ultrasonic thickness gauging equipment delivers exceptional corrosion / thickness inspection accuracy and efficiency.
Amongst its many practical features, the Cygnus ROV UTM has an extra trick up its sleeve. The P50 Probe Handler is cleverly designed to self-align the ultrasonic probe onto straight pipes, from 50mm / 1.97in diameter to flat surfaces. The spring-loaded probe and V-shaped block ensure the probe is positioned correctly and accommodates different pipe diameters. When used with an ROV manipulator arm, the gimbal allows the probe to move to¬ align with the straight pipe surface. In often poor visibility environments, alignment can be extremely tricky and time-consuming, so under the client’s watchful eye, this saves precious time and money.
Once the probe is sitting correctly on the surface, the process is speeded up by the automatic selection of an optimal measuring mode for the best results; quick and reliable measurements are supported by visual verification of measurements through live A-scan.

Many subsea structures sit in tight spaces, extreme depths or poor visibility, making accurate thickness gauging very difficult for divers. For instance, as the search for oil and gas is forced into deeper waters, subsea pipelines are becoming unsafe for divers to reach, yet regular inspection remains crucial.
