Multiple-Echo mode works using a single-crystal probe, providing accurate, error-checked thickness measurements that ignore coatings and corrosion. It does this by transmitting three separate sound pulses rather than one. When all three pulses return, the device records the interval between each pulse to calculate the material thickness.
The beauty of this mode is that intervals between the three consecutive echoes must be equal for the reading to be counted. This makes this mode a lot more accurate than Single- or Echo-Echo modes.

Hatch Cover Detectors
It’s common in certain industries to carry out regular inspections on hatches and door seals to ensure that no water is making its way anywhere it shouldn’t. However, this is often easier said than done, as hairline cracks and pinpoint holes can let in water but be almost impossible to spot visually.
Historically, leaks were detected by a process known as hose testing, which involved pumping the cargo hold full of water. The obvious downside is that the cargo hold must be emptied before this can happen, and the testing can only be carried out while in port. In addition, the test cannot be performed in sub-zero conditions, and the deck scupper drains must be open, leading to pollutants leaking out into the water.
If that wasn’t bad enough, hose testing must be performed by at least two people and cannot detect leaks as well on the cross-joint or side-joint.
The solution to this problem is the Cygnus Hatch Sure which utilises ultrasonic technology to inspect cargo hatch covers and door seals quickly and with pinpoint precision. Unlike hose testing, hatch cover detectors can be used at sea while the cargo hold is full, even in sub-zero temperatures.
The device employs the use of 19 ultrasound emitters that transmit sound waves at 40KHz. The emitters are arranged in such a way that produces an omnidirectional sound field. This ensures even distribution throughout the cargo hold, meaning that leaks even along the side- or cross-joint can be detected with complete accuracy.
Sound energy passes through gaps in the enclosed space. This sound then returns to the device and is caught by the ‘receiver’ part of the device. The return signal is analysed, and information is provided that indicates whether a leak is present or not. The Cygnus Hatch Sure operates with such precision that even hairline cracks and pinpoint holes can be detected. The deck scuppers can also remain active throughout, so there are no leaking pollutants.
Ultrasonic wall thickness measurement gauges interpret and display data indicating corrosion, erosion, or damage. However, for this process to happen, an ultrasonic thickness gauge must be equipped with the right probe (transducer). Attaching the wrong probe will provide false readings and could lead to you making a costly mistake.
At Cygnus Instruments, we supply three different probe types:
Single-crystal probes work with all our ultrasonic thickness measurement gauges. That’s because all our gauges come with Multiple-Echo mode as standard, which single-crystal probes are designed for. In addition, these probes can take measurements through coatings up to 3mm thick or 20mm when ‘Deep Coat’ mode is enabled.
All our single-crystal probes feature a soft face with a replaceable wear membrane and are manufactured from stainless steel.
Twin-crystal probes are intended to work with devices that employ Single- and Echo-Echo testing modes. As such, if you plan on purchasing a ‘+’ or ‘PRO’ device for these testing modes, you should make sure to add twin-crystal probes to the list. Using these probes, you can inspect for signs of heavy back-wall pitting, corrosion, erosion, and damage.
