What Is an Ultrasonic Thickness Tester?
In the field of testing and inspection, a wide range of techniques exist, from visual and magnetic testing to radiographic testing and eddy current testing. The one thing that all these techniques have in common is that they are all forms of non-destructive testing. This means that the test piece isn’t damaged, though some disassembly and reassembly might be required.
Easily the most efficient form of surface thickness testing, however, is ultrasonic thickness testing. This method of testing is highly efficient, quick, accurate, and does not require that the test piece be disassembled. That’s because, with ultrasonic thickness testing, you only need to access one side of the test piece, whether that be a pipe wall or conduit or an entire assembly.
An ultrasonic thickness gauge is a device that utilises a small probe at the end to transmit a sound pulse through a test piece. The pulse hits the far wall and is rebounded back and captured by the probe. A portion of this returning echo is analysed by the thickness gauge, which calculates the material thickness based on the time it took for the pulse to return.
This can then be compared with baseline results to determine if the thickness has changed. A change in thickness could suggest corrosion, erosion, or damage, necessitating repairs or a complete replacement of the test piece. Ultrasonic thickness measuring devices form an essential step in certifying whether a piece of equipment or construct is safe and operating correctly.
Twin-crystal probes are the standard loadout with most devices as these work in tandem with Single-Echo and Echo-Echo testing modes. All Cygnus Instruments ultrasonic thickness gauges come with our own Multiple-Echo mode as standard and so work with single-crystal probes. We also supply ‘+’ and PRO models that support all three testing modes.
Multiple-Echo mode emits three pulses instead of one. The intervals between each pulse are measured and must be the same for a measurement to be recorded. Multiple-Echo allows for measurements to be taken with a far greater degree of accuracy, even through paint and protective coats.
